Pregnant Women & Tea Consumption
Question: Which herbal infusions are safe to drink during pregnancy?
Answer: many women choose herbal infusions instead of caffeinated drinks during pregnancy. According to Health Canada, consumption of blackberry, citrus peel, orange peel, ginger, raspberry, Rosa, lemon balm and linden flowers did not appear to pose a health hazard to women who are pregnant or to their fetus. Health Canada also recommends that any herbal products containing chamomile be consumed in moderation, with the number of cups and strength of the herbal tea being important factors in establishing what would be considered “moderate” use.
Question: Which herbal infusions should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation?
Answer: Health Canada recommends that fennel and mint (spearmint and peppermint) infusion should be avoided completely during pregnancy and lactation.
Furthermore, the following herbs cool on black cohosh, Chaparral, Germander, Kava, Ephedra, Senna, Casara, Horsetail and Gotu Kola could present a health hazard to consumers, including pregnant women. Generally these ingredients are not found in herbal blends sold in grocery stores. However, consumers should check ingredient lists on product labels. Health Canada requires that products containing black cohosh, dong quai, goldenseal root or its extract, Oregon graperoot or its extracts, parsley oil, rue, Uva Ursi or Bearberry clearly bear the declaration “caution: do not consume (common and scientific name of plant) during pregnancy.”
